Quarried from natural stone in a variety of colors, slate has been covering some of the oldest traditional buildings in America and Europe for thousands of years. (One church in Stratfordshire has had the same slate roof for over 1200 years.) Life expectancy of most thinner slate is from 60 to over 120 years depending on the density and thickness. Most slate is colorfast, however depending on the quarry and density, some slate will fade. Some quarries' have green slate of which 20% will turn a buff color in about 5 years.
